Trio Of Accreditations Mark A UK First For Power On Connections
Power On Connections has become the first Independent Connections Provider (ICP) in the UK to be accredited for 'Self-Connection' works in three Distribution Network Operator (DNO) regions: Electricity North West (ENW); Northern Power Grid (NEDL and YEDL) and UK Power Networks (UKPN).
Following the successful completion of an innovative pilot scheme, which was monitored and assessed by Lloyd’s Register, the electricity industry's auditor; Power On Connections is now able to offer greater choice, faster connections and reduced costs for both existing and prospective clients.
'Self-Connection' eliminates the need for the regional electricity company, or DNO, to complete the final connection and power up the site. This increased flexibility allows developers and main contractors to benefit from a full turnkey solution provided by one company, thereby avoiding unnecessary delays to construction programmes.
The pilot scheme was initially trialled on a development in Burnley, Lancashire, completing a low voltage Self-Connection. Working closely with ENW to ensure the connection went smoothly, Power On Connections replaced a large feeder pillar with an unobtrusive link box before completing a live breech joint and live pot end.
Power On Connections is the first ICP in the UK to gain full Lloyd’s accreditation for 11kv Self-Connection jointing and operational work. This was gained following the successful connection of a new 11kv substation at Parkside, Cambridge, within the UKPN area.
"Allowing ICPs to conduct Self-Connection works helps to address the imbalance in the electricity market and increase competition with regional DNOs, a target outlined in the Ofgem 2010 Connections Industry Review," explains Paul Wragg, operations manager at Power On Connections.
"Power On Connections has always strived to be at the forefront of the industry and gaining full Lloyd’s accreditation up to and including 11kv Self-Connection work demonstrates our determination to continually improve service and flexibility whilst also reducing time and costs. We are proud to be the UK’s first ICP to be accredited in three regions and will continue to trial similar schemes across the country so that Self-Connection can become standard practice," Paul concluded.
Power On Connections is currently undertaking trials for both low and high voltage Self-Connection with Scottish and Southern Energy.
