LLDC Reopen Greenway And The View Tube To The Public

Construction News Image
The London Legacy Development Corporation has reopened the Greenway and the View Tube to the public so they can see first-hand the dramatic changes to the Olympic Park.

The much-loved Greenway cycle and footpath, which connects Hackney Wick to Pudding Mill Lane in Stratford, was visited by thousands of people during the build up to the Games. A visitor centre made of green shipping containers near Pudding Mill Lane, called the View Tube, became popular with visits and schools using its classroom and viewing platform.

The Legacy Corporation has now reopened both the Greenway and the View Tube after they were closed during the 2012 Games. The View Tube has a new cafe called Moka East which has doubled in size compared to before the Games. There is also a new covered terrace with outside space, a classroom called View Tube Learn, a viewing gallery and a bike hire scheme offered by local charity Bikeworks.

Situated near the Olympic Stadium and the Aquatics Centre, both the Greenway and the View Tube offer views of the Olympic site which is currently being transformed into Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park - a new piece of the city with state of the art venues, beautiful public parklands and a year round programme of events.

Dennis Hone, Chief Executive of the London Legacy Development Corporation, said: "I am delighted that we can reopen this section of the Greenway to the public. Along with the bus tours we launched last month, this is another way for people to see the creation of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

"The View Tube has become one of the most popular places to visit since the Olympic Park has started. Now it has been expanded to become a larger community hub that will bring people together as their new Park is created in front of them."

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) which funded the View Tube when it opened in 2009, has funded further improvement works with a brand new extension including a kitchen extension and improved viewing gallery to accommodate more visitors and allow better access to it. Work is expected to be completed in mid December.
