The first phase of a major programme of works to upgrade the 21 year old Conwy Tunnel will start this week.
The £2m scheme which is anticipated to be completed over a maximum of four weeks - is to improve the lighting inside the westbound A55 tunnel and will include the installation of 3km of support steelworks; 4km of cabling and 2,500 LED lamps.
Conwy Tunnel, originally opened by the Queen in 1991, is considered a feat of engineering as it carried the A55 road underneath the River Conwy the first of its kind in the UK.
The new lighting system, utilising LED technology, will provide an efficient method of lighting the tunnel, reducing power consumption and minimising the need for ongoing maintenance and unplanned closures.
The Minister with responsibility for Transport, Carl Sargeant, said: "The Conwy Tunnel plays a vital role for the economy of North Wales."
"Ensuring that the A55 meets the needs of local businesses and residents in order to improve the local economy and regenerate the surrounding areas is paramount. Improving the reliability of Conwy Tunnel is integral to this aim.
"I would like to thank roads users for their patience as these works, that will in the long term considerably reduce the need for regular maintenance on the tunnel, are carried out."
