Pupils Put On Hard Hats To Visit Construction Site

Children from West Walker Primary School put on hard hats and hi-visibility protective clothing for a visit organised by affordable housing developer Lovell to see new homes taking shape as part of the Walker Riverside regeneration scheme.

Lovell welcomed a group of twenty five- and six-year-old pupils for a tour of the site where the company is building 39 energy-efficient two-, three- and four-bedroom homes for regeneration company Places for People. The new housing will be for rent and forms part of the award-winning Rivers Gate development.

During their visit, the West Walker pupils found out about the housebuilding process, looked at properties at different stages of construction and took part in a construction quiz. Lovell health and safety advisor Matthew Jarvis talked to the pupils about safety, highlighting the important message that construction sites should never be seen as playgrounds.

Mrs Clare Haidari, class teacher, said: "The children really enjoyed the visit to the building site and loved seeing the machines in operation.

"The site team enjoyed meeting the West Walker pupils and introducing them to the housebuilding process,” says Lovell training manager Sharon Tyer. “Supervised visits are a great way of enabling children and young people to visit a live construction site safely enabling them to find out more about the construction industry and how homes are designed and built, as well as looking at issues such as how homes are made more energy-efficient. It also helps us ensure that children are aware that they should never play on sites."
