Delay For Barry Waterfront Redevelopment

Construction News Image
The consortium behind a £230m regeneration scheme of Barry Waterfront say the project could be delayed by up to 12 months.

According to the BBC, the delay is due to technical issues.

In July 2011, the Vale of Glamorgan council approved a development plan for homes, cafés, a hotel and a new link road. The plan also included play areas and public spaces.

The consortium of Taylor Wimpey UK, Persimmon Homes and BDW Trading (Barratt South Wales) originally put forward the plans in August 2009.

Speaking of the latest development, a spokesman explained: "The preparation of the Barry waterfront site for future development was always going to be challenging. Our ongoing investigative work has raised some technical issues that could extend the preparation phase of the project by six to 12 months."

The spokesman added that the consortium would continue to work closely with the project team to try and minimise any delay.

He said: "There are some technical delays to work that needs to be done on the site but that's to be expected when you take over a site like a former coal port.

"This is a very minor hiccup and doesn't mean a great deal bearing in mind there are many different strands delivering on so many different levels."

Since 2010, the Welsh government has said to have pledged £6.5m towards 35 projects in Barry.
