Council Building Scoops 'Green' Award

The new Camden Council public building at Pancras Square, King's Cross has won an esteemed 'green' award.

The building, which is being built by Kier Construction and has already achieved a BREEAM sustainable design rating of Outstanding, picked up first place in the Other Buildings category of the 2013 BREEAM Awards.

The BREEAM Awards pay tribute to the outstanding skill and determination of the building owners, developers, project teams and assessors across the country. Through selling old inefficient accommodation and moving to the new site, Camden Council will cut carbon emissions compared with the relevant building by an estimated 64% - the equivalent of the annual carbon footprint of 435 Camden residents.

Five Pancras Square will combine a swimming pool, leisure centre, library, customer access centre, café and office accommodation and is set to be one of the greenest buildings in London. The 13-storey building, designed by Bennetts Associates Architects, has a brown roof to enhance the biodiversity and assist with controlling peak storm water run-off, angled cladding to give solar shading, control heat gain, whilst allowing good natural light and openable windows to aid natural cooling through the night.
