Minister Visits Canolfan Addysg Y Bont Site

Investing in infrastructure and supporting Wales' construction sector will ensure Wales builds its way towards economic growth, Finance Minister Jane Hutt has said.

The Minister visited the site of the new £10m Canolfan Addysg Y Bont in Llangefni, Anglesey, which is delivering a variety of community benefits, including supply chain initiatives and targeted training for local people. Construction works commenced in July 2012 and is due for completion by November 2013.

A local firm, Wynne Construction, won the tender to deliver the new school. As a result, the company estimates 83% of the associated jobs have gone to people from North Wales. In addition, five apprentices are currently working on site, and sponsorship and funding was provided to Ysgol Y Bont, with work experience also provided for a Sixth Form Student at the school.

Speaking during her visit, Jane Hutt said: "Growing the economy and creating jobs is our number one priority. I am delighted to visit Ysgol Y Bont to see for myself the benefits being delivered as a result of our £7m investment in this wonderful modern facility - which will make a real difference to the school’s pupils and their families.

"The Canolfan Addysg Y Bont project is a good example of Wales procurement policy in action – and shows how we are building our way to economic growth by investing in infrastructure, creating jobs and delivering significant community benefits. And I am determined to ensure we do more. I have asked the Construction Procurement Steering Group to develop a Procurement Strategy for Construction and this will help embed agreed Welsh procurement policy across all construction projects."

The Welsh Government has consistently called on the UK Government to boost investment in capital infrastructure – urging them to being forward a major programme of infrastructure projects and other activities that will stimulate the economy.
