Ex-Oxford Builder Becomes President Of The Builders' Benevolent Institution
Steve Litt has recently been elected as the President of the Builders' Benevolent Institution, a charity founded in 1847, which assists those running small businesses, and their dependants, who fall on hard times.
Steve started work in 1969 with Hinkins and Frewin Ltd., as a carpenter's apprentice. Having completed his training Steve expanded his skills working up the management ladder for various Oxford based building firms - Western Counties Construction, Knowles and Son,
Hutchins and Green and Leadbitter Construction.
In 1993 Steve decided to break out on his own and started trading as Abingdon Building Services, a successful company which traded for nine years. At that time he joined the Federation of Master Builders, a major trade association for small construction firms, later serving as branch chairman, and he also represented Oxford branch on FMB's Southern Counties Regional Council, for ten years. This was a serious commitment for a small construction firm, and involved many late evening meetings on top of a long working day. He was, as a result of his efforts, subsequently, invited to become a Trustee of the Builders' Benevolent Institution in 2006 and has served with distinction since then, becoming Vice President in 2011
Having established his own business, and with his network of contacts, Leadbitter Construction eventually persuaded Steve to rejoin them as a site manager, as they needed someone with his experience to carry out a large refurbishment contract to hospital accommodation in Romford
Steve liked Essex and now lives in Harold Wood with Sue, his very supportive partner. They purchased a house together, and along the way rescued two dogs from very poor conditions, Chelsea and Misty. He then started working as a self-employed project manager on major sites including a Metro bus station in Perivale, Fulham Football Club, a West London school in Sevenoaks, and the Connaught Hotel in Mayfair.
In 2009 Steve decided, once again, to start trading on his own and formed SPL Building, which is now well established. He rejoined the Federation of Master Builders, is now a London Region member, and was invited to join their Regional Council, as a consequence of his track record in the industry.
He said: "The building industry has been my life and I owe a lot to builders who I have worked with over many years, and if I can help someone in need, or in difficulty, then I am happy to do so."
