Pupils Experience Life On A Construction Site
Pupils from Sacred Heart High School in Hammersmith were recently given first-hand advice on how to carve out a career in the construction industry at an event organised by Morgan Sindall.
The company is currently constructing the £26 million Pure Hammersmith student accommodation development on Shepherd's Bush Road for Pure Student Living, a joint venture between the Carlyle Group and Generation Estates.
The Year 10 girls from Sacred Heart High School were given an insight into potential roles within, and routes into, the construction industry from key women working on the project, including representatives from Morgan Sindall, project architect, Make Architects, engineering consultancy, MTT Ltd and structural engineer, HTS (Heyne Tillett Steel).
Together, the women were able to give the students a comprehensive overview of their roles and outlined potential routes into the sector, including appropriate subjects and further qualifications required to pursue a career in construction.
The girls also enjoyed a tour of the Pure Hammersmith project which will provide accommodation for 418 students and will create 23,000 sq ft of leisure space which will be used by the local community.
Kathy Bagster, business development manager at Morgan Sindall, said: "Construction is often perceived as a male dominated environment so it is vital that girls are inspired and encouraged to consider a range of different career opportunities which are open to them. We were delighted to spend time with these pupils to give them an insight into the industry and to provide them with first-hand experience of life on a construction site."
