Miller Construction has been appointed as main contractor to deliver the new £8.6 million transformation of Newcastle Central Station.
The project, which is subject to Listed Building Consent, will provide a new facility for thousands of passengers and will enhance the historic original Victorian station design. The Grade One listed building will be revamped with new retail and leisure spaces, whilst showcasing the architectural heritage of the station.
Chris Webster, Chief Executive, Miller Construction, said: "We are delighted to have been appointed to deliver Newcastle Central Station’s new transformation in partnership with East Coast and Network Rail. Rail is one of our growth markets and we are focussing our efforts on taking advantage of opportunities when they arise.
"Newcastle Central is a key station on the national rail network and we are confident that upon completion the newly transformed station will be a centrepiece for visitors to the city."
Part of a wider regeneration of the surrounding area of Newcastle city centre, the new improvements for station users include: a new pedestrianised public and retail space, with glazing in the arches to enclose the space and provide weather protection; improved passenger facilities including a new travel centre, better toilet facilities and clearer signage; and more than double the amount of covered cycle storage space.
The improvement work is due to begin in May and is expected to be completed in April 2014. The station will remain operational throughout the works.
