Peterborough Roundabout To Undergo Improvement Works

A city centre roundabout which has become a hot-spot for incidents involving cyclists will be upgraded thanks to funding awarded to Peterborough City Council.

Between 2007 and 2012, 27 collisions have been recorded at the Burghley Square mini roundabout at the junction of Burghley Road and Park Road. Fifteen of these incidents involved cyclists, which is around 56 per cent. In a bid to reduce the number of collisions at this location, works to upgrade and improve the roundabout will start on Monday 5 August 2013.

The improvements will make the roundabout more prominent and there will be changes to the road layout to make it easier for vehicles to turn. The works are expected to take four weeks and are being funded by the Department for Transport’s Cycle Safety Fund, (managed by Sustrans) and Peterborough City Council. The overall cost for the scheme is £160,000.

Improvements to the approach ramps, resurfacing of the approach roads and upgrades to the traffic signage and street lighting are also planned.

Councillor Nigel North, Peterborough City Council's Cabinet Member for Environment Capital and Neighbourhoods, for said: "Works such as these are all part of a bigger plan to improve the flow of traffic around the city and most importantly making it safer for all road users, including cyclists.

"We want people to feel safe whether travelling by bike, car or on foot and we are confident the new Burghley Square roundabout will reduce the number of incidents at this junction."

During the works it will be necessary to close the following junctions for the duration of the scheme:

• Traffic will not be able to travel from Burghley Road to Crawthorne Road or Park Road or from Crawthorne Road to Burghley Road or Park Road

• Traffic will be able to travel southbound through the roundabout along Park Road

A diversion route will be in place, directing traffic via Crawthorne Road, St John’s Road, Bishop's Road, Bourges Boulevard, Bright Street, Lincoln Road, Burghley Road and vice versa.
