Kier Expands Range Of Environmental Services

Kier is expanding the range of environmental services it offers to local authority and private sector customers, following the integration of the recently acquired May Gurney business.

The new offering means Kier now provides front-line waste and recycling services throughout England and Wales to more than 3.2 million households in more than 20 local authorities. With 55 Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) across the UK, bespoke solutions covering both kerb-side sort and commingled collection services, it is expert at responding to the particular needs and demands of local communities.

The company also has unrivalled experience in running resident engagement and education programmes, aimed at encouraging greater use of recycling services in these communities and helping local authorities meet the EU target of recycling 50% of household waste by 2020. Kier processed 570,000 tonnes of recycling materials last year.

Nicola Peake, Managing Director for Kier's environmental services business, stated: "Combining the recycling and waste management contracts and expertise of May Gurney with our own industry-leading capabilities means that Kier is now one of the major residential and commercial recycling and waste management specialists in the UK.

"While many local authorities have made great strides towards meeting their recycling targets and reducing the amount of waste that goes into landfill, more needs to be done to ensure that this increase in rates is sustainable, and local authorities benefit from a vital revenue stream in a time of continuing financial pressure."
