Plans Unveiled For £1.5bn A14 Upgrade

The Highways Agency has published its proposals for a £1.5bn project to upgrade the A14 between Cambridge and Huntingdon.

A consultation regarding the project begins today (9 September).

The plans include a toll system, for a new stretch of the road between Ellington and Swavesey, as well as a widening of the A1 between Brampton and Alconbury.

The consultation documents suggests that a toll of between £1 and £1.50 for cars would be in place for the new section of the A14, which could double for heavy good vehicles.

Elsewhere, from Ellington, the new road goes south and east to bypass Huntingdon, and the Highways Agency has said the current A14 through Huntingdon will no longer be needed as a strategic through-route, and will not be a trunk road when the new scheme is completed. As a result, the bridge over the mainline railway, located close to Huntingdon Station is set to be demolished.

The consultation process runs until 13 October 2013.

If plans are approved, construction is scheduled to begin in 2016 with the new stretch of road completed within three or four years.
