Hull City Council, in partnership with Kingstown Works Limited (KWL), has pledged its support for Gas Safety Week, 16-22 September, and will be spreading the message across the city to raise awareness of gas safety issues.
This third annual Gas Safety Week will see the whole industry coming together to bring gas safety issues to the forefront of people's minds. Dangerous gas work can kill. Incorrectly fitted and poorly serviced gas appliances cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, putting lives at risk.
Councillor John Black, Portfolio Holder for Council Infrastructure, said: "The Council is committed to carrying out an annual gas safety check on gas appliances in council owned homes, to make sure our appliances are safe and in good working order. All gas appliances are installed and checked by Gas Safe registered engineers.
"The Council has a duty to ensure it has taken all reasonable steps to gain access to carry out this work and I would urge all Council tenants to provide access for our partner KWL to carry out these vital checks on an annual basis.
"We all have a part to play and gas safety is everyone's responsibility. Remember your family's lives could depend on getting your appliances regularly checked."
Roger Grannon, KWL Operations Manager, added: "It is a legal requirement that gas appliances are checked annually. It is imperative that customers give KWL access on the requested date to prevent gas appliances being operational without a valid Landlords certificate. KWL would therefore like to enlist customers, support by ensuring they give access to their homes on the service reminder date requested."
