Council Launches New Project To Cut Energy Bills

A new project run by Hillingdon Council is providing homes with external wall insulation that helps residents to keep warm and cut their energy bills.

Hillingdon is the first local authority in London to embark on such a project, which is part of its Warm and Cozy scheme, created with Dyson Energy Services and funded by energy companies and central government.

External wall insulation usually costs between £8,000 and £10,000 but is available through the project for free or for a contribution, typically around £2,000, depending on individual circumstances.

This type of insulation is suitable for older properties with solid walls, usually built before the 1930s, which cannot benefit from cavity wall insulation. Once installed it can cut the cost of heating by £490 a year.

Councillor Philip Corthorne, Cabinet Member for Social Services, Health and Housing, said: "I am delighted that Hillingdon Council is leading the way in London by offering external wall insulation for free or at a reduced rate, as it will make a huge difference to people that struggle the most to heat their homes, including our older residents and families with young children.

"When you consider the advantages, which include less fuel consumption, reduced energy bills and a smaller carbon footprint, not to mention the health benefits of having a well-heated home, it makes sense for the council to invest in improving access to home insulation. I look forward to seeing the project grow across the London Borough of Hillingdon and beyond."
