Construction on a scheme to turn abandoned factories into hundreds of new homes and business space has got underway in Tottenham.
The 1.5 hectare development at Lawrence Road, backed by Haringey Council, will bring more than 260 houses and apartments - replacing empty and unused 1960s industrial warehouses that have blighted residents for years.
Up to 50 jobs could be created by new street-level commercial units that will give local residents a wider choice of businesses, supporting the council's £50,000 refresh of shopping areas on nearby West Green Road.
The carbon-efficient building boasts more than 370 cycle spaces and is within 10 minutes walk of Seven Sisters Station, offering fast Tube, train and bus links to central London, Stansted Airport and beyond.
Councillor Alan Strickland, cabinet member for regeneration, joined managing director of the scheme’s developer Bellway Homes, Stuart Wallace, at the site this afternoon to see construction begin.
Cllr Strickland said: "This development is a symbol of our ambitions for the long-term regeneration of Tottenham, bringing hundreds of high-quality homes and new businesses that will create jobs for local people.
"Local people are at the heart of our plans, and we’re determined to turn eyesores like this into places that residents can live and work so that even more people can make Tottenham their home."
As part of the development, Bellway Homes will contribute £1.5million to local education, highway and jobs schemes, ensuring Haringey taxpayers get the best deal.
Stuart Wallace, managing director of Bellway Homes North London, said: "Bellway Homes is delighted to be able to bring forward this scheme and make a positive contribution to the community in Tottenham.
"Working closely with Haringey Council and local people has produced an excellent residential-led development that will bring terrific new homes and employment opportunities. The Lawrence Road redevelopment replaces unloved commercial buildings with a scheme that significantly benefits the local area and surrounding community - something that local people can truly be proud of."
