Oldham's Old Town Hall To Be Transformed

Construction News Image
Morgan Sindall has been appointed to a multi-million pound scheme to transform Oldham's Old Town Hall into a state-of-the-art family entertainment hub.

The project for Oldham Council will inject new life into the currently derelict Grade II listed building and turn it into a vibrant metropolitan facility, complete with an 805-seat seven-screen cinema, six restaurants and retail areas.

Key architectural features on the existing Victorian building will be retained while allowing the building to have a new use. The hall's existing ballroom, council chamber, committee rooms and court rooms will become the cinema screens, while a new extension with a glass light-box will create a striking new facade on Clegg Street.

Jim McMahon, Oldham Council Leader, said: "Today marks the start of the physical work that will see this amazing building returned to use.

"The Old Town Hall is a fantastic regeneration project, rescuing an important and historic building that was at risk of being lost forever and using it to spark the economic growth and provide the amenities we need.

"Our vision was backed by English Heritage and the public whose consultation responses showed they share our passion to make this happen.

"Morgan Sindall has a great track record and experience in mixed-use regeneration schemes like this and their commitment to using the local supply chain, wherever possible, complements our Get Oldham Working campaign."

The scheme by architects BDP also includes the creation of good-quality outdoor pedestrian space adjacent to the Old Town Hall.

Barry Roberts, area director for Morgan Sindall, said: "This is an exciting and ambitious project to be a part of and we’re looking forward to getting started. It’s encouraging to see the Old Town Hall being brought back into use through this inventive, resourceful scheme.

"The development will bring new life to Oldham’s town centre and give the local community an entertainment centre to be proud of. It's great to be able to bring our extensive experience to this development."
