Climate Change Experts Gather In Cardiff

Climate change experts met in Cardiff this week to discuss Wales's approach to managing climate change.

The event, hosted by the Welsh Government and sponsored by the Minister for Natural Resources, Alun Davies, brought together independent and internationally renowned scientists from the Met Office, the Climate Change Consortium of Wales and the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Resource following the recent publication of a comprehensive assessment of global climate change by the UN.

The International Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) report concluded that the link between the warming of the climate and human activity is even more certain than previously thought and highlighted the need to prepare for extreme weather events and changes in temperature.

Addressing climate change is a priority for the Welsh Government. Just last week Alun Davies set out the importance of a cross-government approach to tackling climate change and building climate resilience into policies, programmes and legislation.

Speaking at the event the Minister said: "As the IPCC Fifth Assessment report has concluded, now is the time to build on what we have achieved to date and take real action on climate change across all levels of government.

"We have made good progress towards our Programme for Government commitments on climate change. For the first time ever we are recycling more than we send to landfill and our greenhouse gas emissions are continuing to fall, while our energy efficiency programmes Arbed and Nest are reducing energy consumption in homes, combating fuel poverty and supporting green growth. But we are determined to go further.

"That is why I recently announced an additional £70 million to protect households in some of the most deprived parts of Wales from fuel poverty and a further £20 million towards preventing flood risk, demonstrating my commitment to both mitigating the impacts and tackling the causes of climate change."
