Balfour Beatty Scoops Award For Best New School Building

Balfour Beatty has won a prestigious award for creating the best new school building in the UK for its work at a London school.

The Education Business Awards recognise excellence in British education across 21 categories, with the School Building Award presented to the establishment that creates the most technically advanced building constructed for the purposes of teaching.

The Newlands School in Southwark, previously known as Bredinghurst School, was built in three phases by Balfour Beatty and can accommodate up to 70 pupils and 45 members of staff.

Many of the students who attend the school have specialist educational needs. The Balfour Beatty project team engaged extensively with students and teachers during the development phase to ensure the layout and design could support their needs. A focus on the requirements for a wide curriculum ranging from horticulture, cooking, design technology, art, sports, music and performing arts was also reflected in the design of the building.

Pat Duggan, Balfour Beatty Regional Director for Social Infrastructure Investments, said: "We are delighted to have won this award and to have had the excellent relationships on the project acknowledged. Credit goes to the project teams at Balfour Beatty, Southwark Council, Wright and Wright Architects and Ramboll for working together to develop a truly successful project that caters to the needs of its users."
