Exciting Basement Conversions

The basement is often something of a neglected room, with grandiose plans disappearing into thin air as soon as the first obstacle is conceived. Leaving the basement to dwindle in a state of disrepair, with leaky pipes and boxes of old belongings, slowly growing mould and slipping into disrepair. Here are a few ideas however to turn that basement into an acement.

Indoor Football Pitch

If your basement is 100 metres squared or more, then there is sufficient room for a small football pitch. The most important thing to ensure however that there is some ventilation in the room and fresh air has access to the basement. Without this, the room will become incredibly warm and may be difficult for the players to play.

Build a wooden shell that will wrap the inside of the wall. Plaster this so players are not subjected to the jagged edges that may be present on the wall. Goals can be built into this wooden construct at either end.

The next step is to lay down an appropriate surface. Astroturf, cut into the shape and size of the room will be simple enough to fit. Then paint pitch markings onto the surface for a feel of authenticity. Additional pieces can be fitted into the room if desired such as a simple analogue scoreboard.

Music Room

If anybody in your family is musical, then the basement is the perfect place for them to hone their skills. Use egg cartons to help restrict the noise that escapes the room by lining the walls with them. Those with a larger budget can invest in bespoke soundproofing for the room.

The main thing to consider when creating a music room is to ensure that all of the piping is fully operational with no leaks. A leak can cause significant damage to expensive music equipment. Furthermore, it is important to ensure that the room is secure so that the equipment in the room is not at risk.

All of the electrics in the room need to be working at full efficiency as there may be a significant amount of power surging through the room.

DIY Room

If you want a room dedicated to DIY projects then the basement is the perfect place to do so. The process is somewhat similar to the creation of a music room. It is important that there is no leaks from any of the pipes, otherwise it could lead to an electrical fire or another disastrous accident. Get a fully licensed plumber to check the piping to ensure that there are no leaks or problems.

If you are planning on using power tools then it would be courteous to the rest of the people who live in the property to ensure that the room is sufficiently sound proofed.

Den

A den is an ideal option for those who are a part of a big, busy family. The den is a choice place for you to escape the rigours and stresses of family life and gives you an opportunity to indulge yourself and simply relax. A room with simple furnishings such as a sofa and a small coffee table makes an ideal chill out spot where you can read with a hit cup of coffee.

Farzana Patel of D Furniture Store has notice an increase in people creating relaxation rooms: "The stress of juggling a busy work and home schedule means that people require more and more 'down time' to reconnect with themselves and clear their heads. I believe that a room dedicated to yourself is a great idea for anybody who is concerned that they may be experiencing more stress than is healthy."
