Balfour Beatty Gives Students An Opportunity To Enter Into Construction
Balfour Beatty is providing 10 construction students in Beverley with an opportunity to get into the construction industry during a project to build the town's new £22m Southern Relief Road.
The company has worked closely with East Riding College to develop and deliver an on-site training programme for students aged 19 to 37 who are working towards their Level Two Diploma in General Construction Operations.
The programme includes participating in all aspects of the work from regular toolbox talks to on-site operations. The students have received their briefings on Balfour Beatty's approach to site safety and are receiving continuous support and guidance during their placements. The students will be given exit interviews and a reference to enhance their chances of obtaining a long-term job in construction.
The project for East Riding of Yorkshire Council includes the construction of the Beverley Southern Relief Road, a 1.8-mile route that will connect the A164, Victoria Road to the A1174 Hull Road, near Figham, and is part of a plan to reduce traffic in the town, especially around the historic Beverley Minster.
Dave Lowther, Balfour Beatty Contract Manager on the scheme, said: "A live-site experience is something which is extremely valuable to young people studying to get into a career in construction. The special element to this course is that the academic learning is site based, supported by on-site practical experience, and we are delighted to be involved in providing this opportunity to students."
