Students Learn Skills On Housing Site
More than 20 students from Stamford College are getting skills and experience as part of SKDC's Glen Crescent housing project.
Four new council properties are being built on the Stamford site to include three two bedroom homes and a bungalow. Work is being carried out by Robert Woodhead Limited.
Apprentices who are studying a variety of trades including joinery, bricklaying, plumbing and electrics, will each get the chance to hone their skills on a real life building site. Director of learning at the college, Gary McPartland, said: "This project is creating the opportunity for these students to improve and hopefully will enhance their job opportunities regionally and locally.
"We are really pleased to be working with Woodheads and the council and we hope that there will be more opportunities like this in the future."
SKDC's head of community assets, Paul Stokes, hopes that the students will get the most from this opportunity.
He said: "This project fits with two of our priorities both to provide good housing and to grow the local economy. We are thrilled with the way that this site is progressing and that students are getting the chance to learn from professional tradesmen.
"These four new homes, once completed, will help us to meet the need for more affordable housing within Stamford.” This development is part of a two year £3m building programme to create 33 new homes in Stamford and Grantham. Planning permission has also been granted for 20 new properties in Lincoln Road, Stamford. These will be eight single bedroom apartments, eight two bedroom houses, two three bedroom houses and two four bedroom houses. The development will include a relocation and re-vamp of the play equipment which is currently in place."
