Councillors on the Development Management Sub-Committee have granted planning permission for a care home at Pinkhill, Corstorphine, subject to conditions.
The 70-bed two-storey care home, undertaken by care home operator, Care Concern Group, will amount to £8m of investment and create an estimated 100 jobs, full and part time.
The home will be a state-of-the-art facility, designed to be a care home of the future, promoting independent living with high quality services. It will also serve to address a dramatic shortfall in care beds which is leading to bed-blocking across Edinburgh and the Lothians.
Delivery of the development will also open up a vacant state, which is currently overgrown and fenced off, for wider community use, improving access for the public.
The home will have split dementia care/nursing care and rooms will include sitting areas and en-suite wet rooms.
Facilities will include:
• a cinema
• library with computer facilities
• spa/café
• reminiscence room
• wellness room with gym equipment, bar, putting green/ bowling green
• roof top garden for residents to enjoy views over the golf course
• other specialist gardens which are designed for residents with dementia and will include, for example, an old style post box and bus stop
• a car provided by the home in order for residents to get to local places
• other key features in order to make it easier for relatives to visit including a private dining room for dinners and celebrations. A children's play area will be included outside as well as activities room inside.
Out of the estimated 100 jobs, 10 of these will be employed through the Edinburgh Guarantee, which sees the Council working with the public, private and voluntary sectors to increase the number of jobs, education or training opportunities being made available to young people.
Manpreet Johal, Director of the Care Concern Group, said: "We are delighted to have received planning permission for our care home at Pinkhill, which will promote independent living and deliver high quality services for residents.
"Not only will it deliver a considerable amount of investment and create an estimated 100 jobs, but it will also serve to address a recognized shortage of care beds across the Lothians as well as opening up and improving a currently vacant site for wider community use."
