Cast Iron Radiators – Environmentally Friendly?

In the pursuit of preserving the environment, many people are finding ways to help in the effort by reducing their carbon footprint, within the home.

One of the many ways to do this is by using energy efficient appliances and equipment, which includes cast iron appliances, particularly cast iron radiators. Let’s look at the following facts about cast iron radiators, shall we?

Energy efficient – Using energy, either through electricity or fire, is a necessity for most people. If you want to be more environmentally friendly, aim to use energy efficient products. Cast iron radiators are often praised for their energy efficiency, as compared to modern steel radiators. The cast iron composition is the main reason for the heat efficiency, which allows it to store more heat before dissipating. Cast iron radiators also emit heat more evenly.

Already present in some old homes – Recycling or reusing is usually the best way to reduce waste and what better way to do that than by re-using cast iron radiators? Some of them are already installed in older homes, although their condition and usability may vary. Sadly, these beautiful cast iron radiators are usually scrapped because people think their heating systems are out-dated. Not so! If they're not completely destroyed or broken, they can be re-purposed and refurbished. They can even be turned into electric radiators through the use of electric heating elements. It’s always great to recycle them.

Durable – Ask professional plumbers and pipe setters and they'll tell you that cast iron radiators will pretty much last forever… and it's true! These radiators are built to last and if properly cared for, they will continue to perform beyond your lifetime. How does durability contribute to reducing your carbon footprint? By using high-quality materials that do not wear out or break easily, you are consuming fewer products and thus, wasting fewer resources.

Cast iron is recyclable – If you ever need to get rid of your cast iron radiator, you can rest assured that recycling them is a lot more environmentally friendly than other metals. Also of note, most cast iron products nowadays are made from the very same recycled cast iron products.
