Luton's TOKKO Building Receives Raft Of Awards

A five-story building in Luton, developed by Wates Construction, is marking its first successful year, after receiving a raft of awards.

Luton's TOKKO Youth Space on Gordon Street, designed by Astudio, recently won the Constructing Excellence Herts & Beds 'Project of the Year' accolade, going on to be named the East of England 'Project of the Year' and has since been shortlisted for the national 'Project of the Year' award.

The success has also seen the scheme win the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) regional award for community benefit for its positive impact on the town, which included the appointment of local Social Enterprise, Dusty Daisy.

Created by young people for young people, TOKKO was designed in consultation with its audience in mind via a series of workshops involving Luton's Youth Steering Group.

The development features performance spaces, dance studios, training rooms, a media suite and games area, a climbing wall, a roof terrace and a cafe for young people aged 13-19 years.

Construction on the development, which also includes a Connexions drop in centre to support youth career aspirations, began in January 2012 and reached completion last spring.
