A joint venture (JV) project between Costain and Laing O'Rourke has won an accolade at an awards ceremony in London.
The Bond Street Station Upgrade (BSSU) scheme scooped a Silver Award at the Green Apple Environment Awards.
The project, delivered on behalf of London Underground, was commended for its commitment to waste management, reducing noise pollution, and its on-site water treatment and recycling.
Work involves developing and installing four new lifts, two new escalators, 450 metres of tunnels and cross passages, a new integrated ticket hall and a multi-storey over site development.
Over 155,000 passengers use the existing tube station on a regular basis.
However, when Crossrail arrives in 2018, passenger numbers are expected to grow to 220,000 daily.
The BSSU project utilised a range of sustainable construction methods in order to minimise its impact to the built environment and natural resources.
The bespoke on-site waste water treatment and recycling facility has, to date, recycled over 34,000m³ of compensation grouting associated flush water.
The reduction in natural resource burden also coincided with 51 tons of capital carbon and significant water management cost savings.
Elsewhere, off-site development of concrete columns and reinforced structural joints eliminated the need for on site construction, further reducing potential environmental damage.
Laing O'Rourke's Environmental Advisor for the project, James Keegan, said: "We are delighted to have been recognised at the Green Apple Awards, which in addition to the City of London - Sustainable City Award previously received this year is testament to all the hard work and commitment of everyone on the project."
