Pier Work Progresses As Firms Bolster Partnership
A leading galvanizing company is playing its part in the ongoing restoration of a fire-stricken Victorian pier to bring it back to its former glory.
Wessex Galvanizers, part of Wedge Group Galvanizing, has teamed up with MRK Steel Erectors to provide its hot dip galvanizing protection to over 250 tonnes of steel used to fabricate constituents of the new Hastings Pier, after its original structure was destroyed by a huge blaze in 2010.
Ian Luxton-Day, Commercial Manager at MRK Steel, explained: "The pier suffered a devastating fire in 2010, seeing around 85% of the promenade completely destroyed. Over the past few years, Hastings Pier Charity has worked closely with designers, developers and construction companies on redevelopment plans to once again make it a popular attraction for visitors and locals alike.
"We were sub-contracted to manufacture, fabricate and install specific steelwork, and we used our long-standing partners, Wessex Galvanizers, to help protect the steel against the elements. This is especially important because the steel is in constant contact with corrosive seawater and often stormy weather, so it will ensure the steel will last maintenance-free for many more years to come. We'd like to wish health and happiness to the charity and to all of those who may it happen."
The Victorian pier opened for the first time in 1872 and was originally 910ft long, but was closed in 2006 after it was deemed unsafe to the public. The fire in 2010 saw Hastings Pier Charity, a Community Benefit Society, gain support from its members and local shareholders to help restore the pier, as well as significant investment from the Heritage Lottery Fund amongst others.
Richard Whiddett, Sales Manager at Wessex Galvanizers, said: "We're thrilled to yet again work with MRK Steel Erectors to protect their steel and help bring the iconic pier back to life. Like many, we're really excited to see the end result and how this will benefit the already bustling local and tourist community in Hastings."
Wedge Group Galvanizing is the largest hot-dip galvanizing organisation in the UK with a history dating back over 150 years. With 14 plants strategically placed across the country, the firm offers a truly national galvanizing service.
