Bouygues UK has been selected as preferred contractor for Phase 3 of the Battersea Power Station project in London.

The design and built contract was awarded by the Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC).

The final construction contract will have a value in excess of £1bn, making it one of the largest private building contracts ever to be awarded.

Works are due to begin in early 2016, alongside the current construction of Circus West (Phase 1) and the regeneration of the Power Station itself (Phase 2).

Phase 3 will feature a new pedestrianised high street for London.

It is to comprise of 1,305 new homes on either side of a 250m 'Electric Boulevard'.

The boulevard will be the main gateway to the development, connecting the Northern Line Extension station to the south of the site with the Power Station.

It will also include 350,000 sq ft of space dedicated to retail and food/beverage outlets.

The 'Battersea Roof Gardens' building will be located to the west of the high street. It will include new homes, a hotel and one of the largest roof gardens in the capital.

A collection of five buildings called 'Prospect Place' will also be built, along with Prospect Park, which is to house a new community centre and children's playground.

Work is expected to start on the northern half of Phase 3 in the first quarter of 2016, with a projected completion date in 2019.

Works on the southern half will commence in 2018 and conclude in 2020, along with the opening of the Northern Line Extension.

Rob Tincknell, CEO at BPSDC, said: "The appointment of Bouygues UK as preferred contractor to build Phase 3 - the gateway to the Power Station - is a major milestone and increases the total area under construction on site to approximately 5m sq.ft.

"Bouygues UK demonstrated an impressive approach to the project and had a clear ability to address the challenges of the current London market, resulting in the best cost and programme outcomes. We welcome them to the delivery team that will build these new landmarks for London.”

Bouygues UK will work alongside the Phase 3 principal consultants who have already been appointed:

• Foster + Partners – Architect: Battersea Roof Gardens.

• Gehry Partners – Architect: Prospect Place.

• Adamson Associates – Executive Architect: Prospect Place and Basement Architect.

• GVA Second London Wall - Project Manager and Employer's Agent.
