Balfour Secures £25m Onshore Substation Contract
Balfour Beatty has secured a £25 million contract to build a high voltage onshore substation for an offshore wind farm off the coast of Yorkshire.
The firm will develop the facility at North Killingholme in North Lincolnshire as part of the new Hornsea Project One offshore wind farm.
The project will allow the transfer of electricity from the wind farm to the nearby National Grid substation.
Works include building core buildings and compounds, installing low voltage electricity equipment, low voltage cables and communication cables.
In addition, roads, paths, drainage and landscaping will be developed.
The 2.5 year contract also involves the installation of high voltage electrical equipment by third parties.
The contract was awarded by DONG Energy.
Mark Farrah, Regional Balfour MD for the North and Midlands, said: "Following Balfour Beatty's successful completion of Westermost Rough and the current Burbo Bank project, the Hornsea Project One contract award is testament to the longstanding, successful relationships our project teams have established over the last 3 years."
Duncan Clark, Programme Director for Hornsea Project One at DONG Energy, added: "We are very pleased to award this important contract to Balfour Beatty, which plays a crucial part in the on-going development of Hornsea Project One as well as providing another example of the benefits to the UK supply chain in our investment in offshore wind."
Hornsea Project One will provide enough electricity to power over 800,000 homes in the UK and is the third onshore substation in the UK from DONG Energy which has been awarded to Balfour Beatty.
