Transport Secretary To 'Crackdown' On Roadworks Congestion

Construction News Image
Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin has revealed proposals to launch a 'major crackdown' on congestion caused by roadworks on local roads.

It is understood councils and utility companies could face fines of up to £5,000 a day for roadworks being left in place on local roads when no one is actually working.

Similar charges would also be incurred for those who leave temporary traffic lights in place after work has been completed.

This would result in a seven-day working week, with workers on 'A' roads either having to work over the weekend or lift works until they resume.

Councils will still need to carry out essential road works, such as fixing potholes to re-surfacing, while utility companies will still need to dig up roads to fix broadband connections, water, electricity or gas supplies.

However, Mr McLoughlin said the changes are aimed at delivering "a better journey for drivers".

"Roadworks can be essential, but that doesn't mean they should be in place any longer than is absolutely necessary," he said.

"That is why I am looking at proposals to reduce queues and make drivers' lives easier. These commonsense measures will be a welcome relief to those trying to get from A to B on our local roads."
