A leading galvanizing company is celebrating after its services were called upon by long-standing customers for a large sustainable project aimed at reducing Buckinghamshire's environmental impact.
Caunton Engineering Ltd called upon the team at Worksop Galvanizing – part of Wedge Group Galvanizing – to process over 2,000 tonnes of structural steelwork used as part of a new Energy from Waste (EfW) facility in Aylesbury.
The project was developed through a partnership between Buckinghamshire County Council and FCC Environment – formerly the Waste Recycling Group – which is set to save the council approximately £150million during the course of the 30 year contract. With a capacity to treat 300,000 tonnes of waste each year, the facility will help to reduce the dependence on landfill use, and will generate 22mW of electricity – enough to power 36,000 homes.
Allan Younger, Sales Director at Caunton Engineering Ltd, explained: "We were chosen to supply over 2,000 tonnes of galvanized steel used to house the various processes and equipment in the Tipping Hall, Bunker Hall, Boiler Hall, Flue Gas Treatment Area, as well as office accommodation, workshops and air conditioning units, with the highest of the structures measuring at 52m high.
"Galvanizing was the preferred method of corrosion resistance due to its ability to withstand challenging environments such as this and offer long-term durability against the elements. Our long-standing suppliers, Worksop Galvanizing, processed our steel for us and we had to work extremely closely with them to ensure that product completion and delivery was prompt and maintained within the wider project timeline."
Zurich-based Hitachi Zosen Inova (HZI) was principal contractor which employed Sir Robert McAlpine to deliver the Civil Works of the project. Careful coordination was the key to the success of the large-scale project with various suppliers and contractors working to tight deadlines throughout the build phase.
Paul Robinson, Commercial Manager at Worksop Galvanizing, added: "This project was exciting to be part of due to environmental benefits the facility will bring to Buckinghamshire, and we hope to work on many more sustainable developments with Caunton Engineering in the future."
Wedge Group Galvanizing is the largest hot dip galvanizing organisation in the UK with a history dating back over 150 years. With 14 plants strategically placed across the country, the firm offers a truly national galvanizing service.
