Councillors Approve New Guidelines For Noisy Construction Works

Construction News Image
Noisy construction works have been banned from taking place during the weekend in Kensington and Chelsea, it has been announced.

Councillors have approved a new Code of Construction Practice which prohibits building works from taking place on a Saturday.

The new guidelines were drawn up in response to residents complaining about noise from construction work in west London.

Previously, the code only applied to work occurring on a Sunday and between 'permitted hours'. A further set of restricted hours have also been introduced for high impact activities such as demolition and concrete breaking.

In addition, the guideline places emphasis on developers and contractors to establish good communications with neighbours close to construction sites and those likely to be disturbed by noisy works.

The regulations will be phased in and enforced in the borough through the use of Control of Pollution Act 1974 powers.

Cllr Tim Ahern said: "We completely recognise the importance of building and construction work in the borough. However, we must appreciate that for people who live close by it can have an enormous impact on their lives.

"This is why we have introduced this new Code of Practice. It will help bring peace on the weekends and require developers to work far more closely with people who live close to their sites to mitigate, wherever possible, the problems associated with noise, dust and disturbance."
