Construction Firm Fined After Skip Loader Overturns On Worker

Construction News Image
A construction firm has been fined for safety failings after a skip loader overturned and injured an employee during sewer works in Cambridgeshire.

Mead Construction (Cambridge) Limited, of Heath Road, Swaffham Prior, Cambridgeshire, pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 13(2) of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007, and Regulation 9(1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.

It was fined £40,000 with over £5,787 in costs.

Cambridge Crown Court heard how the firm was making a sewer connection from a domestic property to the main sewer at Hop Row in Haddenham on 04 February 2015.

A worker was driving a skip loader, tipping spoil onto a spoil heap when the vehicle overturned and trapped his leg.

The workers injuries included fractures to his right ankle and sprained ligaments.

A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation into the incident found that there was a failure to plan, manage and monitor work using a skip loader, including allowing an untrained employee to use the vehicle while not wearing a seatbelt.
