Construction News Image
ISG has been appointed to refurbish and redevelop a building for the University of Oxford.

The firm will modernise and upgrade existing facilities at the Tinbergen Building, as well as creating a new chemistry teaching laboratory.

The building is currently home to the University of Oxford's Department of Experimental Psychology and Department of Zoology.

Features of the BREEAM 'Excellent' project include a phased refurbishment of the existing four-storey building, encompassing around 600,000 sq ft of space and upgrading teaching, research and write up areas.

A new three-storey structure will also be built to create a suite of "highly-specified" undergraduate laboratories for the Chemistry Department.

Sustainable measures of the project includes the installation of external solar shading, an extensive roof-mounted photovoltaic panel array, advanced heat recovery system and connection into the university's combined heat and power (CHP) district heating system.

Paul Sharp, divisional director of ISG's Engineering Services, said: "Schemes like the Tinbergen Building require a contractor that is experienced in technically demanding environments, offering an end-to-end solution with a highly engineered response to complex challenges, such as vibration restrictions, services continuity and safe extract of gases."
