Work To Begin On A590 Flood Scheme In Cumbria

Construction News Image
Work is to begin on a flood alleviation scheme on the A590 in Cumbria.

Highways England will install a large drain across the carriageway's Lindal 'dip' to funnel and channel away run-off water from the route.

In addition, existing drainage will be replaced with new kerb drains and gullies.

The improvements are part of a bigger project to install a permanent solution, as previously storms have caused flooding on the carriageway east of Lindal-in-Furness near Ulverston.

The issue is caused by a combination of factors such as the carriageway dip and water from several sources, including the local road network, collecting on the route.

Work is due to begin this month and will be completed by Saturday, 09 July.

During the project, temporary traffic lights and traffic management convoy systems will be deployed.

Highways England project manager Peter Gee said: "We are acutely aware this issue is a long-running concern for local people and other regular users of the A590, and we’re as keen as anyone to provide a permanent solution.

"While we have investigated and discounted a number of remedial options over the last few years, we are now in sight of developing a permanent fix. In the meantime, these drainage improvements will not only help provide some temporary relief but also contribute to a long term solution."
