Labour politician Chris Leslie has urged more people to join the construction industry as over 230,000 new jobs are set to be created over the next five years.

Mr Leslie, MP for Nottingham East, made the call during a visit to the Nottingham Biosciences Centre on Wednesday, 15 June.

The visit was part of the Open Doors campaign which gives potential industry employees a "behind-the-scenes" look at building sites in Britain.

Mr Leslie said: "I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. It just proves how successful and rewarding a career in construction can be. After experiencing Open Doors 2016, I would encourage everyone to consider a career in construction."

Lorraine Gregory, the Construction Industry Training Board's Partnerships Manager, added over 15,000 new jobs are expected to be created in the East Midlands by 2020/21.

"Open Doors is an excellent way of inspiring more people to consider a career in construction. It is a great opportunity to showcase just how rewarding a career in the sector can be," she said.
