Galliford Try To Deliver £5m Flood Scheme In South Wales

Construction News Image
Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has selected Galliford Try to build a new £5 million flood protection scheme in South Wales.

The project aims to protect over 660 properties from flooding in Newport.

Features of the scheme include developing sheetpiling, earth embankments, ground raising and flood walls along the banks of the River Usk and the Crindau Pill tributary.

The defences will protect against a one in 200-year event and includes the effects of climate change over the next 50 years.

The project is the first scheme awarded to the company through Lot 1 of NRW's Civil Engineering Framework Agreement.

Graham Bucknell, Framework Manager of Galliford Try's Environmental business unit, said: "We will be liaising very closely with local residents especially those that occupy properties immediately adjacent to our works to ensure minimum disruption.

"Environmental factors are also a priority. The River Usk is an important wildlife site and subject to a high level of environmental protection and the Crindau Pill is home to protected reed beds and a habitat for otters."

Planning on the scheme has already started, with work beginning on site in September. Completion is scheduled by June 2017.
