Over 85% Of Construction Workers Consider Building Sites To Be H&S Hazard - Survey

Construction News Image
Over 85% of construction workers surveyed considers their building site to be a health and safety hazard.

Construction union UCATT said employers are "not doing enough" to ensure the safety of their workforce.

The survey was carried out by solicitors Howard Baker.

Brian Rye, Acting General Secretary of UCATT, said: "For construction workers worried about their safety the simple message must be get organised. Unionised workplaces and those with independent safety reps, are proven to have far fewer accidents. Equally union members who are unfortunate enough to suffer an injury at work can access free legal services and receive 100% of any compensation awarded.

"The high accident rate revealed in this report underlies why the new 'safety differently' policy being adopted by Laing O'Rourke which only concentrates on fatalities at work, is such a retrograde and dangerous step for construction workers."
