BAM Nuttall Secures £23m Hull Flood Defence Contract

Construction News Image
BAM Nuttall has secured a £23 million contract to deliver a flood alleviation project in Hull.

The contractor will work alongside Mott MacDonald (BMMJV) to repair 39 flood defences along a 7.5km stretch of the River Hull.

In addition, new defences will be built using combi sheet pile wall and undertaken using marine plant. Concrete will be used to restore existing structures.

The development is part of a £36.5m scheme by the Environment Agency (EA) to protect around 45,000 properties from flooding in Hull. The project is to begin in Spring 2017, with completion scheduled for Autumn 2019.

Paul Ellis, Operations Manager for BAM Nuttall's North of England office, said: "Kingston-upon-Hull at present has safeguards that provide a 1-in-200 year standard of protection.

"It's vital that we continue to ensure a good standard of maintenance, while building additional new protection, to stop the city flooding."

Neil Longden, Flood Risk Manager at the EA, added: "This scheme is brilliant for the people of Hull. Not only will it ensure much relief to the many residents whose homes are at risk of flooding but will kick start new developments and economic growth along the river corridor."
