UK Govt To Invest £600m In Low Emission Vehicle Infrastructure

Construction News Image
The UK Government has revealed plans to invest over £600 million into boosting infrastructure for the ultra-low emission vehicle market.

The Department for Transport (DfT) has begun consulting on a series of measures to make electric chargepoints more accessible, with more than 11,000 already available across the country.

Proposed plans include supporting 'smart' electric vehicle charging that is flexible to grid demands, ensuring there is provision of electric chargepoints and hydrogen refuelling points at large fuel retailers and motorway service areas, and encouraging the roll-out of hydrogen refuelling stations.

The measures, which will be included in the Modern Transport Bill, follows the number of ultra low emission vehicle registrations surging 250% in the previous two years.

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said: "We are committed to making transport cleaner and giving even more drivers the option of using a low emission vehicle as we strive to improve air quality across the country.

"Our ambition is for nearly all new cars and vans to be zero emission by 2040, and we are taking real steps to achieve this in the Modern Transport Bill. We now want to hear the views of businesses and the wider public."

The Modern Transport Bill consultation on measures for low emission vehicle infrastructure will last for four weeks and will close on 23 November.
