Thousands Of Construction Jobs To Be Created In Leeds City Region
A new report has revealed thousands of construction jobs are set to be created in the Leeds City Region.
The research, by the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), reveals around £13 billion of construction projects are scheduled to begin over the next three years.
Major schemes include large housing, infrastructure and commercial building projects such as Leeds South Bank, Kirklees Enterprise Zone and regeneration of the Castleford Waterfront and Kirkgate areas of Wakefield City Centre. Overall, the developments will boost demand for an additional 13,000 workers, bringing the region's total construction workforce to 120,000.
The research highlighted particular needs for civil engineers, labourers, plant operatives and logistics professionals. In addition, CITB's analysis predicts more than 2,000 bricklayers, 3,000 painters and decorators, and 4,000 process managers are needed across the LEP area, which covers Leeds, Bradford, York, Kirklees, Barnsley, Wakefield, Selby, Calderdale, Harrogate and Craven.
Jeremy Wright, CITB Partnerships Manager for Leeds City Region, said the report reveals there is a "strong pipeline of work in the region".
"This report shows that there are real opportunities in construction in the area and beyond," he said.
"We need people out there on site, but we also need a whole range of people doing vital back office and support jobs."
