Fall In Number Of Health And Safety Inspectors

Construction News Image
New figures have revealed a 25% cut in the number of Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspectors since 2010.

Following a Freedom of Information, union Unite states the number of frontline inspectors has fallen from 1,311 to 980.

The news follows further revelations by Unite that it takes on average three years and four months from a fatal workplace accident until those responsible are brought to justice.

Funding levels for the HSE are also set to be cut by 46% at the end of this parliament from what it was in 2010, which a number of safety laws have also been scrapped.

Unite acting general secretary Gail Cartmail, said fewer inspectors will lead to more bosses taking risks with workers' lives to boost profits.

"HSE inspectors play a vital role in keeping workers safe," she said.

"Rogue bosses who are prepared to break safety laws, are only kept in check by the fear of being caught and punished. Fewer inspectors mean more bosses willing to risk workers’ lives to boost profits.

"It is clear that the HSE is being denied the resources to undertake its role properly. In these circumstances it is more important than ever that union safety reps are given the training, support and time to conduct their duties and keep their fellow workers safe."
