Wates Wins £5m Sheffield Housing Adaptations Contract

Construction News Image
Wates Living Space has won a £5 million contract to carry out housing adaptation works in Sheffield.

The three-year deal will see between 400 to 500 properties across the city converted to make homes of elderly and disabled individuals safer and more accessible.

Features will include the installation of railings and wheelchair ramps, as well as converting existing bathrooms to wet rooms. These works will create an accessible environment for residents by removing any barriers that they face to using their properties independently.

As part of the deal, Wates will engage with local schools, provide work experience opportunities and create new jobs across the region. Highlights include delivering eight workshops or escorted site visits with schools, in addition to six workshops within local schools and colleges, six work experience placements for over 18s and four apprenticeships – two of which have already started on site.

Previously, the company carried out the council's window and door refurbishment programme, which has seen the installation of 5,000 doors and 2,000 windows at around 3,500 homes across the city.

John Flower, Business Director at Wates Living Space, said: "We are delighted to be growing our already strong relationship with Sheffield City Council – our being awarded this contract is testament to the excellent work we have previously undertaken on its behalf.

"Adaptations such as these have to be of the highest standard, allowing people with sometimes complex needs to live independently in their own homes, confident in the knowledge they are as safe and secure as possible."
