Construction News Image
Wates has been appointed to build 21 new council houses in Wandsworth.

The contractor will deliver the new homes on the site of a former community centre on the Putney Vale Estate off Stroud Crescent. Completion is scheduled for late 2018.

Features include 11 council homes for estate residents who wish to downsize and 10 self-contained supporting housing properties providing independent living for residents with physical and learning disabilities.

Cllr Clare Salier, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: "Wandsworth is one of only a few authorities which is building its own supported housing for vulnerable residents. In addition, this scheme is important because it enables other local households to downsize, freeing up more council housing for people."

The Putney Vale Residents Association said: "Since the closure of the Stag House building in 2012 the residents association of Putney Vale has been working with the council regarding any future development of the site.

"The council has now approved the building of 21 new extra care flats of which 11 will be reserved for the elderly tenants on the estate; following the appointment of Wates as the contractor for the development the residents association looks forward to working together as part of Wates' Customer Engagement Working Group."
