Drew Smith Group has won a £10 million contract to build 56 'affordable' homes in Southampton.
The scheme will be delivered on the corner of Meggeson Avenue and Townhill Way in Townhill Park. Work has started on site and completion is scheduled for March 2019.
Drew Smith, part of Galliford Try Partnerships, will build a six-storey apartment building and six houses to replace three existing residential tower blocks at the site.
Designed by Kenn Scadden Associates, the new apartment building will be built using the Metframe light gauge steel system; a system which allows for offsite pre-manufacture of panelling and walls. The mix of the new homes will provide 17 one-bedroom flats, 26 two-bedroom flats, seven three-bedroom flats and six two-storey, three-bedroom houses.
Overall, the project represents the first phase of regeneration for the Townhill Park area, where the Council plans to build more than 600 new homes.
Southampton City Council Leader Simon Letts said: "We're pleased to be working again with Drew Smith on Plot 1 at Townhill Park following our recent, successful partnership at Erskine Court.
"These affordable homes are the first step in a much larger project designed to help transform the Townhill community. Over the years, we've been working with the community and have recently received helpful feedback on the proposed Village Green and its playground, part of the environmental improvements for all residents."
Stuart Munro, Managing Director of Drew Smith, said: "We are extremely pleased to be delivering the first phase of new homes at Townhill Park, regenerating the site to provide a significant number of much-needed affordable homes."
