Wates Appointed To £25m Farmiloe Building Refurb

Construction News Image
Wates has won a £25 million contract to refurbish the Farmiloe Building in Clerkenwell, London.

The Victorian building is to be converted into new office space on behalf of the Standard Life Investments Pooled Property Pension Fund. Work is underway on site and completion is scheduled for autumn 2019.

Designed by AWW, the scheme involves a series of demolition works to remove a number of 1930s and 1950s extensions from the site. These will be replaced with a contemporary design, featuring concrete finishes throughout and an interconnecting atria linking to the existing building.

Other features include new roofing, glazed roof lighting, modern interior office space, a new basement and replacement windows, as well as ground floor retail units.

Overall, the project will convert the 19th century building into a modern office facility while retaining the building's original façade.

Phil Shortman, Managing Director of Wates Construction London, said: "Wates has transformed some of London's most iconic buildings. It is testament to our skills and expertise particularly within the heritage sector, combined with our vast new build knowledge that we have been entrusted with the transformation of such a significant structure as the Farmiloe Building.

"We are now in the process of engaging our local supply chain partners to ensure we deliver training and employment opportunities to local people as part of our commitment to providing a socioeconomic legacy, beyond our construction remit."
