Morgan Sindall has won a £15 million contract to redevelop Old Street Roundabout in London.
The firm will deliver the two-stage design and build contract under Transport for London's (TfL) Civils Projects Framework. Work is planned to start on site from Autumn 2018.
Supported by design partners WSP, the project aims to upgrade facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport by providing segregated cycle lanes, more bus lanes and more pedestrian space. The roundabout island will be removed to form a new peninsula-style junction, reintroducing two-way traffic movements and converting the existing roundabout into an open and accessible public space.
The scheme is the first to be commissioned under TfL's Civils Projects Framework, which supports the organisation's £4 billion Roads Modernisation Programme to enhance/refurbish tunnels, bridges and other structures across Greater London's road network.
Paul Gott, managing director of Highways at Morgan Sindall, said: "We are delighted to be awarded the first project under TfL's Civils Projects Framework. This scheme calls upon a wide variety of expertise, interfacing with the TfL strategic road network and London Underground's Old St Station entrance.
"We are looking forward to starting work on this transformational scheme, and our strong track record of similar projects means we are well placed to deliver it."
Leon Daniels, Managing Director of Surface Transport at TfL, said: "The radical redesign of Old Street roundabout will help achieve our shared objectives of improved air quality, reduced car dependency and more active travel. This project will ensure the people who work in or visit the area benefit from a truly inspiring new public space."
