A £9 million town centre redevelopment project is to begin in Strood, Medway.

Improvements to transform the existing car park and market space at Commercial Road, creating a new and improved market site, are scheduled to get underway the week commencing Monday, 19 February.

Funding for the project has been secured by Medway Council from the central government's Local Growth Fund through the South East Local Enterprise Partnership.


Other aspects of the works, which will be carried out later this year, include upgrades to pedestrian routes, cycling facilities and improvements to the road layout in the town centre to reduce congestion.

It is anticipated that the works will be completed later this year..

Cllr Rodney Chambers, said: "Strood is one of Medway's key regeneration sites and I am pleased that the improvement works will soon be underway."

Cllr Jane Chitty said: "This is great news for the future of Strood market. Medway has a long history of markets and we are keen to continue this tradition.  We have listened to traders' feedback and have plans in place to improve the market. I am pleased that stallholders have been given the opportunity to trade at Gillingham market whilst the improvement works take place."
