Graham Construction has been started work to upgrade Queen Mary University of London's (QMUL) School of Mathematical Sciences Building.

The project will see the existing facility at the Mile End campus refurbished and extended to provide suitable accommodation for both staff and students. In addition, the building's envelope will be overhauled to reflect its position on the campus.

Other features will include building a new central space to enhance the learning experience, while both energy usage and carbon emissions will be reduced as the project is targeting a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating.

Completion is scheduled for April 2019.

Boris Khoruzhenko, Head of Queen Mary's School of Mathematical Sciences, said: "The School is delighted that work is now underway on the Maths Building. We are already looking forward to returning next year to a transformed building where students, staff and visitors can work together in a fantastic new environment. It will make a huge difference to the School to have a state-of-the-art space to work and study in."

Rob Joyce, Graham Construction's London office director, said: "Once complete, the School of Mathematical Sciences building will provide an inspiring, collaborative space for QMUL's community of students and staff. As well as high quality teaching rooms, there will be a range of private and group study areas throughout the building in addition to more informal social areas.

"We will work closely with QMUL to ensure that these works are delivered on time and on budget, while drawing on our extensive experience of delivering complex refurbishment projects for the education sector."
