Workers At Tarmac Building Products To Take Further Strike Action

Construction News Image
Workers at Essex-based Tarmac Building Products are to take fresh strike action in a dispute over pay.

Members of union Unite are taking industrial action today, 20 February in protest at the company's decision to impose a new contract on new workers, which will result in them receiving lower rates of pay.

New strikes are scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 06 March and Thursday, 08 March with further walkouts on Tuesday, 20 March and Thursday, 22 March, totalling nine days of strike action. More strike dates are set to be announced in the coming days.

Since industrial action began on 30 January, Unite said it understands the production of concrete blocks has been severely affected.

Unite regional officer Guy Langston, said: "Tarmac was warned that further strike dates would be announced if this dispute was not resolved. Due to the company's refusal to bring forward proposals to resolve this dispute, that is what happened.

"Unite members never take strike action lightly but they believe that the changes that Tarmac is making to contracts are the thin end of the wedge.

"The strikes are having a severe effect on the company's production capabilities. It is clearly in Tarmac's interests to table fresh proposals to end this dispute.

"Unite remains ready and willing to sit down and negotiate with Tarmac at any time."
